Hallux valgus - Other Forms

Juvenile Type

The deformation occurs in early years; the earlier the more severe and the more difficult to treat, since the condition has more chances of recurrence than in other cases. Heredity (mostly maternal) is in one dtudy a cause in 72% of juvenile Hallux Valgus
.
This is frequently associated with:
  • Metatarsus Primus Varus with an increased angle 1-2 (metatarse angle).
  • The greater distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA), the more slanted the 1st MTP (metatarso phalangeal) joint.
  • Hypermobility : ligamentary hyperlaxity.
  • Rounded metatarsal head.
  • Metatarsus adductus: medial  inclination of all metatarsals.
The surgeon must therefore take all these factors into account to lay out a complete surgical strategy.
There is no conservative treatment to counter the development of this type of Hallux Valgus.
However one must wait for the foot to be fully grown before attempting surgery.
